Empowering Communities: CEO Jodi Phelan’s Interview on CFWE Windspeaker Radio

At Hiregood, our mission goes beyond simply keeping Edmonton clean and safe. We’re dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of people who’ve faced tough circumstances, whether they’ve struggled with homelessness, mental health, substance use, or abuse. In a recent interview with Windspeaker Radio, our CEO Jodi Phelan shared Hiregood’s story of transformation, resilience, and community-building.

Hiregood’s Impact on Edmonton

From humble beginnings with just five employees, Hiregood has grown into a dynamic social enterprise that employs over 165 staff members—many of whom have experienced barriers to traditional employment. These individuals aren’t just part of a workforce; they’re part of a movement that’s reshaping Edmonton. By cleaning public spaces and acting as safety attendants in washrooms and transit areas, Hiregood’s staff are on the front lines of creating a safer, more welcoming environment for everyone.

Phelan highlighted the recognition that Hiregood has received from Edmonton’s mayor, Amarjeet Sohi, who praised the company’s role in reducing emergency calls and improving the cleanliness and safety of public spaces. In his May 2023 State of the City address, Mayor Sohi emphasized that Hiregood has made Edmonton “a cleaner, more vibrant, and safer community.”

Personal Growth Through Community

What sets Hiregood apart is the commitment to personal growth and mentorship that is deeply embedded in the company’s culture. Phelan shared the emotional journeys many staff members have taken, transforming not just their careers but their lives. She emphasized that “the resiliency of the human spirit” shines through every day at Hiregood, where people are given second chances and the opportunity to succeed on their own terms.

Phelan mentioned that mentorship is key to this success. Whether it's through day-to-day guidance or larger support systems, every employee is given the tools to thrive. This philosophy creates a ripple effect: when staff members feel empowered, they are able to bring that strength and compassion to their work in the community.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Forward

As with any organization doing trailblazing work, Hiregood has faced its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was being seen as a legitimate business, despite the undeniable social impact they were making. Over time, however, Hiregood has earned its place as both a successful business and a force for good.

Looking ahead, Phelan shared the exciting news that Hiregood is expanding its model to other cities, starting with a pilot project in Calgary. This expansion reflects the scalable impact of their work, demonstrating that other cities are ready to embrace a new approach to tackling social issues while maintaining public spaces.

A Beacon of Hope

As Jodi Phelan emphasized in the interview, the work at Hiregood is more than just a job—it’s about restoring dignity, creating a sense of purpose, and building a stronger, safer community. This interview showcases the heart of what we do: changing lives while keeping our city clean and welcoming for everyone.
