From Treatment to Employment: Real Stories of Recovery Through Work

When people hear the word recovery, they often think of addiction or treatment programs. But recovery means something broader—it’s about healing from crisis, rebuilding after loss, and regaining control after instability. For some, that crisis might be substance use. For others, it might be escaping violence, overcoming poverty, or rebuilding after homelessness or mental health challenges.

At Hiregood, we see all of it. Our staff come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own story of resilience. And while the circumstances differ, one thing remains the same—stable work changes lives. Employment brings structure, confidence, and dignity. It creates purpose and possibility. It breaks the cycle.

Here are real stories from people who’ve taken that next step—and found belonging, security, and hope along the way.

Finding a Place to Belong

Clarissa faced immense challenges in the workforce, struggling with mental health and the discrimination that came with being deaf. Just getting to work on time was a battle. But when she joined Hiregood, she found something different—a team that supported her.

“Maybe not all jobs have to be a struggle,” she says. “I learned that I could belong somewhere.”

Today, Clarissa shows up for her community every day, spreading compassion and helping others find hope.

Overcoming Barriers to Employment

Kaitlyn was desperate for work. Rejected over and over—even when offering to work for free—she began to believe the jobs weren’t meant for her.

“People told me I wasn’t even qualified to wash dishes,” she recalls.

Through a training program, she was placed with Hiregood. That opportunity gave her more than a paycheck—it gave her stability.

“Now I have financial security, job security, and home security,” she says. “I used to have no hope. Now I do.”

From Fear to Confidence

Keith spent years avoiding public spaces due to anxiety and social challenges. Basic interactions were difficult. But with the support of his peers and supervisors, he slowly gained confidence.

“I used to be full of fear,” he says. “Now I know how to face it—and overcome it.”

With Hiregood, Keith has learned skills, grown in his role, and found his voice.

Restoring Life After Hardship

For Mary, the impact of domestic violence left lasting wounds. But work gave her something back: her life.

“I have my confidence again. I have my horses, my pets, my routine. I can finally move forward.”

Today, Mary not only works—she mentors others, proving that healing is possible.

Why Employment Matters in Recovery

A job is more than income. It’s routine. It’s responsibility. It’s showing up and being seen. For people rebuilding after crisis, work offers structure, purpose, and dignity.

At Hiregood, we’ve seen what happens when people are given a chance: confidence grows, lives stabilize, and communities get stronger. Recovery doesn’t end when treatment ends—it continues with support, connection, and employment.

We’re not asking for handouts. We’re asking for access. Access to job placements. Access to the tools that make long-term recovery possible.

Let’s make employment part of Alberta’s recovery strategy. Because stable jobs create stable lives.
