At Hiregood, we believe in empowering individuals to create lasting change in our communities. Our Safety Attendants embody this mission every single day, performing a crucial role that blends cleaning, security, support work, and overdose prevention into one impactful position. But what truly sets them apart is their deep connection to the communities they serve, making them far more than just employees—they are local heroes on the front lines of public safety.
More Than a Job: Cleaner, Security, Support Worker, and More
Our Safety Attendants juggle multiple responsibilities, acting as cleaners, security guards, support workers, and overdose prevention responders all rolled into one. From ensuring that public spaces remain clean and welcoming to responding to life-threatening overdoses with naloxone kits at the ready, their role is as diverse as it is essential.
It's not just about maintaining public spaces; it’s about safeguarding the well-being of the community as a whole.
Familiar Faces, De-Escalating Challenges
What makes our Safety Attendants uniquely effective is their connection to the local community. Many of them come from the very neighbourhoods they now help protect. This familiarity enables them to build trust and defuse potentially volatile situations before they escalate. Knowing the area, the people, and the rhythms of the community allows them to step in when tensions rise, not as outsiders but as trusted figures who are there to help, not judge. Their presence is often a calming force in an otherwise chaotic world.
Making an Impact on the Frontlines of the Opioid Crisis
Our Safety Attendants also play a pivotal role in overdose prevention. Equipped with naloxone kits, they’re trained to step in during life-or-death moments, saving lives that might otherwise be lost to the opioid crisis. But beyond the physical response, their ongoing relationships with vulnerable individuals mean they are able to offer support and resources, helping people get the help they need.
Their job goes far beyond what’s written in a contract. It’s about compassion, empathy, and truly making a difference in the lives of the people around them.
A Lifesaving Presence in Our Community
Whether it's providing security for public spaces, keeping them clean, or stepping up during crises, our Safety Attendants do the work of five people every day. But what really makes them heroes is their dedication to fostering a safer, healthier community. By building relationships, preventing harm, and offering support, they’ve become an integral part of Edmonton’s social fabric.
Their work doesn’t just make public spaces cleaner—it makes them safer, more welcoming, and full of hope for everyone.
