At Hiregood, we believe that safe, clean, and accessible public spaces are essential for a thriving community. That’s why we’re proud to partner with the City of Calgary to operate the Downtown Washroom Attendant Program—an initiative aimed at enhancing public safety, cleanliness, and accessibility in high-traffic downtown park washrooms.
Bringing Proven Success to Calgary
This program builds on the success of similar initiatives in Edmonton, where the presence of washroom attendants led to a 90% reduction in emergency calls at key locations. By placing trained attendants at designated public washrooms, we’ve seen firsthand how a welcoming presence can improve both community safety and the overall experience for visitors. Now, Calgary is implementing this model to ensure that its downtown parks remain inclusive, well-maintained spaces for all.
What the Program Looks Like in 2025
As of this year, Hiregood is providing trained attendants at Century Gardens, Central Memorial Park, and Devonian Gardens, with more locations expected to be added throughout 2025. Attendants will be on-site seven days a week, helping to maintain cleanliness, assist visitors, and offer support when needed. Their presence plays a critical role in reducing social disorder, providing assistance to those in need, and keeping these public facilities safe and welcoming.
Why This Matters
Public washrooms are more than just amenities; they’re a key part of an accessible, livable city. Whether someone is spending time in the park, attending a festival, or simply passing through downtown, having safe, well-maintained washroom facilities makes a difference. The Downtown Washroom Attendant Program is also one of 28 key safety initiatives introduced to improve the overall well-being of Calgary’s core, alongside expanded festivals, increased security measures, and enhanced housing supports.
A Commitment to Community Impact
Hiregood is more than just a service provider—we are a social enterprise dedicated to creating employment opportunities while improving public spaces. Our team members, many of whom have overcome personal barriers to employment, are proud to contribute to this initiative and make a positive impact every day. By reinvesting every cent of profit back into our mission, we ensure that our work benefits not just public spaces, but the people within them.
